Auckland City Santa Parade

Yesterday, several Room 14ers showed up at the massive Santa Parade down Queen Street in Auckland's CBD. It was a beautiful (but hot) day and it was great to see so many Hobsonville Primary School students in the crowd this year! My part in the parade this year was as Clifford the Big Red Dog. To see highlights of the parade, just click on the link below. I appear as Clifford 11 minutes into the broadcast.

Sun Bears

Many Room 14ers have read the story "Sun Bears Are Special". Yasmin has found a website for us that gives more information on these incredible bears!
Just click on the 'Sun Bears' Link under 'Science' on the side of our blog!

Mr. Nash

The king viper is over 5m long (wow that’s long).
This snake has skin around his face (the skin goes to his neck to his eyes).
His fangs are about 3cm long and 1cm wide.
The snakes tongue is like a fork and it pokes its tongue out without opening its mouth.

Camel Spiders

A Camel Spider can run 20 kilometers an hour (wow that’s fast).
They are not always the same; some are long, big, short and small.
These spiders can kill people (I wouldn’t like to get close to one).
Some of them have mouths like scissors and they can make you bleed.
If you try to catch and see it up close you have to put it in a plastic bag.
They live in deserts.
They usually like shady spots like rocks.

Octopuses

Did you know an octopus has 9 brains and 1 of the brain are where our is and the left overs are in their tentacles.
If an octopus loses a tentacle it grows another one.
Octopuses are clever at opening jars that you can’t open.
Male octopuses are bigger than female octopuses.
Octopuses are big in cold water and small in hot water.
Octopuses can be a few different colors and some are the same color.
On an octopuse's tentacle they have suction cups which helps it stick to things.

Robber

Smash! Crack!

Firstly, someone broke into our classroom during the night this was so scary as a robber would try to break into my house!

Secondly, we had to go into the MMR for the WHOLE Day!
It is not as fun in the MMR!

Thirdly, there was a crack in the front door of our classroom (not the door close to our cloakbay)
It was the door close to our fitness court!

I hope the robber does not come back again.

(hopefully the Police catch them!)

Robbers

This is a story that Blake wrote at home shortly after our classroom was burgled.

Last night a robber came into our class room which is Room 14 and he smashed our glass on the door and it gave every one in our class a scare like a cat who's been run over by a truck.
The next day at school we found foot prints on the table and every one was surprised.
There was glass around the class but Ginger was safe and the people in the class were safe as well.
The robber’s foot was as big as a rock and they were ENORMOUS.
We were sad because we couldn’t go in the class room.
We hope he goes to jail.

Room 14’s Robbery

On Monday evening the 30th of August, Room 14 was broken into by some very bad people!

Firstly, when I got to class on Tuesday morning, I saw that the window on the door had been smashed and that there was glass on the floor. We had to be careful where we walked because Mr Nash did not want any of us to cut ourselves and get hurt. The man at the door was picking up all the glass and he was busy fixing the window on the door. By using something like a window wiper, he scrapped it along the edges of the window frame to get rid of the glass that was still stuck inside.

Secondly, I saw that the projector had been taken out of the ceiling as well. There was a big hole where it had been. I saw that the wire that was attached to the projector had been torn and was hanging from the side of the ceiling.

Thirdly, we had to go into the MMR room because there was too much glass on the floor and we needed to start our class. We were all very excited as Mr Nash told us what had happened. I couldn’t believe my eyes or my ears as I looked and listened. I was very sad that our classroom had been robbed.

In conclusion, a school should NEVER be robbed, as it is a place of learning and I hope the police catch the robbers.

Robbery

Room 14 was broken into last night and some of our finest technology was stolen. )-:
This makes us very grumpy towards whoever stole our stuff and left our classroomin a huge mess. GRRRRR.
If you are at school, please take notice of the signs around Room 14 so that you know where students have been re-located and which areas we need to stay away from.

In the meantime, we'll be taking a break from some of the cool things we've been doing with new technology lately.

Thanks,

Ella's Persuasive Writing

Why We Should Have A Student Teacher

We definitely should have a tudent teacher in our class.
Firstly, we can teach her Dragons and Heroes and our fitness games. Then she could teach her class when she becomes a proper teacher.
Secondly, then she could teach us some of her ideas of Maths, Reading and writing. Then we could move up a level .
Thirdly, we could teach her what we are leaning to do. Because then she could teach her class and see if they get it.
We truly need a student teacher in our class.
We extremely need a student teacher.

Persuasive Writing

Room 14 has been working on persuasive writing this term! We're hoping to have some really convincing writing to put up here on the blog for you to read soon! In the meantime, this is what we've been learning to do...

Use an introduction that gives our opinion without a reason.

Use paragraphs to organise our reasons.

Add detail to our reasons.

Use strong persuasive words.

Use a conclusion that restates our introduction using different words.

Use a persuasion map to help us organise our ideas before we write.

The Droo only eats blue food (and the blue food is as blue as the sea) because it rhymes with his name. See look, Droo/blue.
He doesn’t like red food because it doesn’t rhyme with his name.

News Update From Yasmin

Rosie, Ginger, and Garnet

I have 3 baby cows (heifers) called Rosie,Ginger and Garnet. Rosie is black as the night sky. Rosie is the bossy one with the food. We feed them special pellets mixed with some water. Rosie is greedy. When she has some food in her bowl she will go and pinch food from the others.
Ginger is light brown and is very cute and adorable. She is a fussy eater and takes her time with her food. I like Ginger as she is gentle and kind. Garnet is the cool one. I can do anything with her. She can eat out of my hands, and I can pat her on her body not like the other cows.
I love my little cute cows and they will all become very kind and friendly as time goes on.

His ginormous teeth are as big as a refrigerator.

He is as scary as a big ginormous monster.
He likes sleeping in his nice warm cave.

Reading WALTs

Room 14 has been learning some new reading skills this term in their reading groups. We started off the term learning to become better at prediction. Once the students told me they were successful at confidently predicting, we moved onto summarising. Some Room 14ers had asked me to put our WALT sheets up here on the blog so that they'd be able to practice the skills at home and achieve success more often. Click on the pictures below to see what 'We Are Learning To' do. Feel free to print them off as well.

News Update from Ella and Troy

All About Me And Troy In The Weekend

Me and Troy had a great time in the weekend. Troy was very happy. Also did you know Troy is very hungry? He eats lots of junk food. Troy learnt how to skip, put shoes on and learnt how to play games. Me and Troy had a amazing time. We played Mums and Dads. Troy was the bear, I was the Mum. On Saturday I told him about my netball game. On Friday when my friends came over I told them ''Did you know on Friday I got Troy and he's amazing''. We drew some amazing, cool drawings.

News Update from Michael

About My Rabbit
My rabbit's name is Oscar. He is a giant flemmish rabbit. He is cuddly and has very soft ginger fur. Oscar likes to lick the salty sweat off your arms and hands. He really likes people around him and he does not like to be alone but he does not like to be held. Oscar lives at my nana's house with Daffidol while my dad and mum sell our house. Daffidol is also a giant flemmish rabbit and she is bigger than Oscar. Oscar likes to eat lots of different vegetables like carrots, cabbage, lettuce and broccoli which is his favourite. He is 8 months old and he weighs almost 5kgs. He can jump very high and very far. He once even jumped into my nanas spa pool while she was in it. It was very funny. He still has another year of growing and we are hoping he will weigh 10 kgs like his dad when he is fully grown. My favourite thing about Oscar is when I hold a carrot out he will come and eat it and when I open his cage he comes up to me and licks me hello. The photos of Oscar were taken when he was 8 weeks old. You can see how big he was and now he is even bigger.

Podcasting Update

So far this year with our podcasting, we've been learning to:

1) Introduce ourselves so our audiene will know who's speaking.
2) Use a nice big, clear voice so that our audience will be able to understand us.
3) Check the distance of the microphone and hold onto just the silver part so that the computer will be able to record our voices properly.
4) Add detail to what we're sharing so that our audience can get a clearer picture in their mind.
5) Add a conclusion so that our audience will know when we're finished the podcast.

To this list, we are now adding:
6) Engage our audience by asking them a question about something they've heard.

Starting with today's podcast, you can tune in and be quizzed about some of the news that has been shared!

Current Homework Sheet

Several parents have come to see me about accidentally misplacing their favourite Room 14er's homework sheet. To help solve the problem, I will do my best to ensure homework sheets are placed right here on the blog to download and print.
Step #1: Right click on the homework sheet below.
Step #2: Select 'Save picture as' and save to your hardrive.
Step #3: Load the file on your computer once it has finished downloading.
Step #4: Print file to fill A4 sized printer paper.
The format is a standard 'jpg' picture file which all computers should be able to read. However, if you are still struggling to download and view the file, please come see me in the classroom.

Cheers,

Mr. Nash

There were only 50 kids who get invited to have breakfast with some of the All Blacks in Auckland and my sister and I were two of them. I was really happy to be able to play with them.
